How to peel tomatoes

Whether you are using tomatoes in a sauce or soup, this is a quick, handy, basic technique to peel tomatoes without fuss.


  • 4 tomatoes
  • water, for boiling
  • cold water
  • ice



  1. In a saucepan, bring enough water to cover tomatoes to boil
  2. Fill a bowl with cold water with some ice


  1. Using a paring knife, score ‘X’ on the bottom of the tomatoes
  2. Slowly lower the tomatoes in to the boiling water. Boil for 1 min
  3. Using a slotted spoon, move the tomatoes to the ice water bowl to stop cooking for a minute or so
  4. Peel. Skin should come right off
